{"id":6189,"date":"2025-01-15T07:47:56","date_gmt":"2025-01-15T06:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldeneggcheck.com\/investeringen-in-nederlandse-startups-2024\/"},"modified":"2025-03-25T11:05:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T10:05:00","slug":"investeringen-in-nederlandse-startups-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldeneggcheck.com\/en\/investeringen-in-nederlandse-startups-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Investments in Dutch startups increase with 23% in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong year despite weak fourth quarter<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>2024 was the third best funding year ever for Dutch startups, following the peak years 2021 and 2022!<\/p>\n<p>Dutch startups and scale-ups raised a total estimated amount of ca. \u20ac2.5 billion in 2024, an increase of 19% compared to 2023, when \u20ac2.1 billion was invested. In peak year 2021 this was \u20ac5.4 billion and in 2022 \u20ac2.9 billion.*<\/p>\n<p>These are the main insights from the Quarterly Startup Report, a quarterly data analysis by Golden Egg Check together with Dealroom, KPMG NL Emerging Giants, the Regionale Ontwikkelingsmaatschappijen (ROM\u2019s), NVP, Techleap, Invest-NL and Dutch Startup Association.<\/p>\n<p>The top 3 biggest investments in Q4 of 2024 went to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Citryll \u2013 \u20ac85 million<\/li>\n<li>Cradle \u2013 $73 million<\/li>\n<li>Meatable \u2013 \u20ac30 million<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At first glance, things might look promising, but don&#8217;t be fooled! Despite these strong figures, there was a decline in the fourth quarter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Q4, \u20ac460 million was invested, 26% less than in Q4 2023 (\u20ac620 million) and 2% less than in Q3 2024 (\u20ac470 million)<\/li>\n<li>The number of deals decreased by 25% compared to Q4 2023, from 114 to 85<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We identify some key challenges:<\/p>\n<h4>1) \ud835\ude69\ud835\ude5d\ud835\ude5a \ud835\ude63\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude62\ud835\ude57\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude67 \ud835\ude64\ud835\ude5b \ud835\ude59\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude68 \ud835\ude56\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5a \ud835\ude68\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude5c\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude5b\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude58\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude69\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude6e \ud835\ude59\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude6c\ud835\ude63 \ud835\ude58\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude62\ud835\ude65\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude59 \ud835\ude69\ud835\ude64 \ud835\ude65\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude6b\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude68 \ud835\ude6e\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude68<\/h4>\n<p>In 2021, 2022 and 2023 there were ~415 investments per year (or ~105 per quarter). In 2024, we only saw 342 published rounds, so an 18% decrease.<\/p>\n<h4>2) \ud835\ude61\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude68\ud835\ude68 \ud835\ude56\ud835\ude65\ud835\ude65\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude69\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude69\ud835\ude5a \ud835\ude5b\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude67 \ud835\ude65\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5a-\ud835\ude68\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude59<\/h4>\n<p>In 2024, both the *number* and the *percentage* of deals below \u20ac1M went down. While in 2023 still 1\/3 of investments was below \u20ac1M, in 2024 (remember, with less deals to begin with) that share decreased to only 25%.<\/p>\n<h4>3) \ud835\ude5b\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude59\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude68\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude5c \ud835\ude69\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude60\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude68 \ud835\ude61\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude5c\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude67<\/h4>\n<p>This is more anecdotal than I can show proof with our funding numbers, but both for startups and investors the fundraising landscape has become more challenging. Startups have a harder time to raise a follow-on rounds (there were less Seed and Series A rounds), so they need extension\/bridge\/top-up rounds in order to survive. Also VCs need more time to raise their funds, and more often than not settle for a lower fund size than their initial target. Some funds even decide to quit or stop raising a next round (did you see Prime Ventures in FD this morning?).<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/21144421\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/21144421\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>All in all, 2024 was still a top 3 year for venture capital in the Netherlands. Q1 was a very strong quarter, the rest was&#8230; mwah.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mensink comments:<br \/>\n\u201cAfter a good start in the first quarter, I had expected and hoped that after almost two years of relative status quo, investment growth would pick up. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Many startups are having a harder time attracting follow-on funding, investors often have to step in with additional capital and they themselves need more time to raise new funds. So there are still many challenges.
